Boxee tonight told customers that it was delaying the Boxee Box to November. It had planned to ship the phone by the end of the spring but discovered that it was “overly ambitious.” Company founder Avner Ronen stressed that the timeframe was a firm one set by D-Link and that it would lead to a greater amount of polish.
“Our vision is to make the Boxee experience on a set top box as good as (and where we can, better than) the one you already know on a PC,” Ronen said. “The goal is to play HD videos from the web or a local network in 1080p and use hardware acceleration whenever possible. And to provide a TV browser experience that can handle almost everything you throw at it, including Flash 10.1. Not to mention making all this happen for an affordable price and on a quiet device that will not feel obsolete 12 months after you buy it.”
The Boxee Box was conceived as an open, platform-independent gateway to audio and video that could get to normally web-only video as easily as locally stored content. It won’t have significant local storage of its own but will have its own app platform More >
